What is a Dietitian?
‘Dietitian’ is a protected title. It can only be used by someone who is qualified with a recognised degree, MSc or postgraduate diploma in Nutrition and Dietetics. Also Dietitians are uniquely qualified to translate scientific information into practical dietary messages, particularly regarding clinical or medical issues. To practice as a Dietitian you must be registered with the Health Professions Council (HPC). This is what is meant by the title Registered Dietitian (RD). What does a Dietitian do?
Registered Dietitians translate the science of nutrition into everyday information about food. They can do this for both individuals and groups to promote the well being of individuals and communities to prevent nutrition related problems.
Many Dietitians work in the NHS, within hospitals or the Community, advising and educating patients, doctors, nurses, health professional and community groups regarding nutrition, and dietary and lifestyle manipulation for the treatment of clinical conditions i.e. Diabetes, Heart disease, Kidney disease, Allergies, Cancer etc. Dietitians also work in a variety of other areas, such as in Research, Education, Health Promotion, Media and the Food Industry.

Why would I need to see a Dietitian?
A Dietitian will help you to improve your health & well being by advising and educating you regarding manipulation of your diet and lifestyle based on scientific evidence. If you are overweight and/or have a clinical condition such as Diabetes, high cholesterol, Coeliac Disease, Kidney disease then a Dietitian will help you to lose weight, manage your symptoms and maintain good health.
Many people suggest that if they are not overweight then they do not need to see a Dietitian. However, it is important to remember that your weight is only one of the factors that affects your health and that being a healthy weight does not necessarily mean you have a healthy diet and lifestyle. It is essential to consider all the important factors affecting your health i.e. dietary intake, activity, stress, environment, to ensure you achieve the ideal balance for good health and well being.
Why should I see a Dietitian privately?
The benefits of using a private Dietitian are:
You don’t require a medical referral (the Dietitian may need to contact your GP or Consultant for information depending on your medical history, however)
You can be seen quickly
You can be seen at a time and venue that suits you
Your appointment will be as long as it needs to be and you can be seen as frequently as you wish
You know exactly who you will be seeing and will see the same Dietitian for each appointment
